Simplify to Succeed: How to Remove Bottlenecks in Business and Life

Why More Isn’t Always Better

In business, when something isn’t working, the common reaction is to add more—more staff, more systems, more strategies. But often, the real problem isn’t a lack of resources; it’s inefficiency.

People hire me because they want solutions to their biggest bottlenecks, whether in business or personal growth. And what I’ve noticed? The same patterns show up in both.

Instead of identifying the root cause of an issue, most people pile on more responsibilities, restrictions, or tasks—thinking that if they just do more, they’ll break through.

But true progress doesn’t come from adding—it comes from simplifying and focusing on what actually moves the needle.

Step 1: Identify the True Problem

A business owner recently reached out to me, asking for help with operations. They wanted to optimize workflows and increase efficiency to increase revenue, so their solution was to hire more therapists.

But after asking the right questions, I realized their real issue wasn’t operations—it was lead generation. They didn’t have enough clients coming in. Their knee-jerk reaction was to add more people to the team, rather than fixing the root issue: how to get more leads and fill the therapists they already had.

This exact pattern shows up in personal growth. Take weight loss, for example. Someone struggling with their health might think they need to restrict everything—cut out carbs, sugar, and entire food groups. But the real issue isn’t what they’re eating; it’s how they’re regulating blood sugar, fueling their body, and managing stress.

Before you add more complexity to your life, stop and ask: What is the actual problem I need to solve?

Step 2: Simplify Before Adding

When something isn’t working, most people assume they need to do more. More hours at the gym. More restrictions. More tasks in their day.

But adding more only creates more overwhelm.

Instead, take a step back. What can you eliminate? What are the unnecessary steps that are just creating friction?

In business, this could mean automating manual tasks instead of hiring another person. In your personal life, it might mean focusing on nutrient-dense meals instead of following extreme diet trends.

Step 3: Focus on the Smallest Change That Will Make the Biggest Impact

The reason people fail at fixing bottlenecks is that they try to change everything at once.

But small, intentional changes are what create real momentum.

For the business owner, their biggest impact move wasn’t hiring—it was creating a clear lead-generation strategy that brought in the right clients.

For someone struggling with energy, it’s not about taking 10 different supplements; it’s about balancing blood sugar and eating enough protein.

The key is asking yourself: What’s the one thing that, if I fixed it, would make everything else easier?

Step 4: Align Your Actions With Your True Goal

Sometimes, we get stuck in a cycle of “doing” without ever questioning if what we’re doing aligns with what we actually want.

A business might think they need to scale and expand when, in reality, they just need to refine their systems.

Someone might think they need to hustle harder when what they actually need is more rest and recovery to operate at peak performance.

Instead of blindly pushing forward, take a step back. Ask yourself:

  • Is this actually solving the problem?
  • Does this align with my long-term vision?
  • Am I making things harder than they need to be?

The lesson here? More is not always better. Smarter is better.

Whether it’s in business or personal growth, success doesn’t come from piling on more—it comes from identifying the real problem, simplifying, and focusing on what moves the needle.

If you’re feeling stuck, take a step back and re-evaluate. You might not need to do more—you might just need to do less of the wrong things.
